Premier Dalton McGuinty made a shocking announcement on Tuesday declaring that the Ontario government has successfully sorted out a deal from negotiating with the 25,000 doctors of the province. McGuinty was visiting the Google Canada’s new offices in downtown Toronto when he made the announcement.
McGuinty seemed joyous and proud while he made the announcement of agreement with the Ontario Medical Association, as it had been months since the government and the association were scrambling to find out a solution. He declared that this deal is good news for doctors, patients and taxpayers. McGuinty admitted that “I’m pleased and proud.
McGuinty is trying to cover up the budget deficit of $14.4-billion by finding savings from the treasury. The premier asserted that he hopes that these successful negotiations will give a good impression to other labor groups, including the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation which is now starting job action, showing that the government is keen towards making successful deals through negotiations. McGuinty’s administration has imposed a two-year wage freeze on almost 1.2 million Ontario public servants for saving money in his budget. This led to massive protests at Queen’s Park.
The official government news release stated that “after careful review of the regulatory changes made in May, six fees will be adjusted: the self-referral fee, the optical coherence tomography fee, the after-hours premium, the anesthesia flat fee, the laparoscopic premium, and the coronary intensive care premium.” It also stated that “obligations are also being changed in the Schedule of Benefits for lumbar spine X-rays and CT scans.”
