The board of the Parliamentary Press Gallery announced its decision on Wednesday morning, declaring that Xinhua News Agency will not be demoted from the Parliament Hill Press Gallery as all the allegations of espionage are totally in “lack of evidence.”

The executive board of the gallery has been investigating the accusations made against the news agency since April, when a former Xinhua reporter, Mark Bourriem, resigned from Xinhua and publicly accused the company for assigning him the task of collecting intelligence for the Chinese regime which was not at all intended for publication.

Industry analysts illustrated the matter as a case of an employee/employer dispute gone sideways, and having broader implications. Apparently there was no sign or indication towards to what extend did the board investigate Xinhua as majority of the board members refused to comment on the matter. Xinhua competes with CCTV as the Chinese Communist Party’s most powerful propaganda organ and is directly under the control of the CCP’s propaganda department. According to Reporters Without Borders, Xinhua is assigned the high-priority task of censoring news in China and communicating the Party line.

In more than 70 years history, this task has formalized through policies advocating for class warfare, murder, religious suppression, and what some human rights groups describe as genocide. Only one board member, Paul McLeod of the Chronicle Herald, was convinced to take an action. McLeod suggested that Xinhua shall be demoted to a temporary membership status for avoiding to have defend the Chinese state news agency in the future.
