The outgrown NHL lockout has significantly affected the P.E.I. merchants, who basically rely on the merchandise from the league’s teams as a fundamental part of their sales, but now the scenery has changed. The local merchants have asserted that since the NHL lockout has shut down professional hockey for 75 days, now teams like Quebec Major Junior are seeing a boost.
The owner of API Hockey Pros, Marco Thorne, shared his grief that sales of NHL jerseys, hats and other items related to the league has seen a significant decline than this time last year. He staked an estimation that “at least 50 per cent.” Thorne pointed out that “the start of the season until Christmas is always good for NHL apparel, except for this year of course, where I think people are a little turned off.” Thorne also shared that, for a change, he is now selling more PEI Rocket hats and jerseys more than before.
The vice president of the team, Trent Birt, claimed that growing support of the Charlottetown team can also be witnessed by its affect in ticket sales. He stated that attendance of viewers is boosted up to 100 people per game. Birt mentioned that “I see a lot of new faces in the building” and “a lot of new people, and when I speak to those people that’s what they’re saying. You know, they’re here, there’s no NHL, what else are they going to do? Let’s go to a Rocket game. And we’ve hooked a good number of those people too, as return visitors.”
