Approximately 300,000 members and supporters are now enrolled to participate in the voting process for selecting the next leader of the federal Liberal party, which is being deemed as the highest number of voters in the party’s history so far. The president of the party, Mike Crawley, explained that a total of 294,002 people are eligible for voting in the upcoming elections. Majority of these voters are predicted to have used the party’s new supporter class to sign up for free, although the party has provided no breakdown.

Liberal party’s spokesperson, Sarah Bain, stated that “It’s an incredible surge for us,” and “right now, the focus for the party is converting these people to voters for the leadership race.” A clear majority of the enlisted voters are expected to be supporting front-runner Justin Trudeau. The Trudeau campaign originally asserted to have gathered a total of 150,000 people, however now unofficial claims assert that the number has risen up to 170,000.

Back in 2006, 4,605 members voted on the fourth ballot to narrowly elect Stéphane Dion, whereas previously in 2003, 3,453 members voted on the first ballot to elect Paul Martin. All eligible voters are advised to register themselves over the next two weeks, for being able to cast ballots during the week of April 6-14. Bain mentioned that “we no longer have delegated conventions but when we did, members still had to go to delegate selection meetings and still had to actually move themselves to a location where we were having it.”
