Patrick Chan has succeeded in ably scoring the world figure skating title for the third time in a row, even though he was not all happy about it. Chan started his free skating at La Boheme in an effortless landing of quad-toe, triple-toe combination and his next quad-toe as well.
He seemed to have already taken the championship title for the third time in a row, but then he unluckily fell on his triple Lutz and for the second time again on his triple Axel, and near the end of the program he doubled a planned triple Lutz. Chan was quite expressive about his regret as he vigorously hit his forehead in frustration before leaving the ice. Chan later stated that “I’m a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to do a great program like the short program in front of an audience that was so special.” He added that “but I’ll take the win and put it in my back pocket and learn from this.”
Chan was already heaving a seven-point lead when entered the Friday’s skate event and ended up still hanging on to the lead with a one point advantage over Kazakhstan’s Denis Ten, the surprise star of these worlds . Ten had to compromise with a silver medal, while Spain’s Javier Fernandez took the bronze. Chan was handed over the medal on Friday night, but he really won it on Wednesday with his exquisite Rachmaninov routine, which set a new world record score of 98.37.
