On the 3rd day of 2nd test match, Rangana Herath successfully collected three wickets to take control against Bangladesh on Monday as the tourists ended day three with a meager 52-run second innings lead with only six wickets remaining. The left-arm spinner dismissed Mohammad Ashraful (4), Jahurul Islam (48) and Mahmudullah (0) to finish with 3-45.
Herath also took five wickets in the first innings of the match and approaches his 200th test wicket mark. At stumps, Bangladesh was 158 for 4 with Mominul Haque batting on 36 with captain Mushfiqur Rahim at 7. Earlier, Sri Lanka was dismissed for 346 with a 106-run first innings lead. Opener Tamim Iqbal and Islam gave Bangladesh a solid start partnering 91 runs for the opening wicket. Iqbal made 59, his 12th test half-century including four fours and a six before edging seam bowler Shaminda Eranga to the stumps.
Then Herath bowled Ashraful out. Afterwards, a promising 47-run third wicket stand between Islam and Haque but Herath took two wickets on consecutive deliveries. Islam batted well and scored 48 before getting lured by a Herath delivery and stumped by wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal. Next ball Herath bowled Mahmudullah for a golden duck. Herath did produce a couple of additional opportunities which were missed out by the fielding flaws.
After resuming the day on 294-6, Sri Lanka only got able to add 52 runs by losing last four wickets. Kumar Sangakkara top scored with 139, and completed his 33rd test century before Seamer Abul Hasan trapped him for caught behind for an early breakthrough. While the Bangladeshi offspinner Sohag Gazi (3-111) wrapped up the tail.
Sangakkara partnered 195 runs stand for the fifth wicket with Chandimal, who completed his second test century (102) after Sri Lanka slumped to 69-4. Seamers Rubel Hossain, (2-45), Robiul Islam (2-52) and Hasan (2-80) contributed to show magic with the ball for the tourists. Any team who will win this match can claim the two-match series after the first match ended in a high scoring draw at Galle last week.
