Lonny Chapman Theatre (North Hollywood, CA)

The Group Rep presents Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, the stirring drama by Frank McGuinness, the Irish playwright behind The Factory Girls and Dolly West’s Kitchen. When three men are taken hostage by Islamic militants, they must endure confinement (and each other) as they await an uncertain fate. Set in Beirut in the ’80s, the prisoners — a doctor, a journalist and a professor — concoct games and sing songs to stave off tedium, fear and insanity. Their efforts result in an fascinating exploration of humanity persevering in the face of enormous deprivation. Nominated for two Tonys, including Best Play, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me moves from the depths of tragedy to the heights of camaraderie and unbreakable friendship. Gregg T. Daniel, director of last season’s award-winning Cobb, returns to the Group Rep to helm this emotional roller-coaster ride.
