A disturbing video posted on YouTube illustrates in minute detail, about how “chronic leaking” was the primary reason behind “accelerated corrosion rates” in the controversial collapse of Elliot Lake, Ont.’s Algo Centre Mall, resulting in the death of two women and several more injured.
Additionally, the video also shows actual security camera footage while cars slide through the roof as the structural support, damaged by years of salt and water, collapsed. The video, comprised of a blend of computer-animated reconstruction and actual footage, was created by an architectural and engineering company, Norr Limited, which was especially assigned by the Ontario’s provincial police criminal investigators to create a forensic engineering report on the June, 2012 collapse. The police-commissioned report released by Norr on Tuesday, alleged that the corrosion problem was so intense that it is a complete mystery to figure out how it took so long before the rooftop parking deck in Elliot Lake, Ont., caved in. The report, comprising of 142 pages and the foresaid video, amount to a depressing account of a tragedy long in the making that might have been prevented.
The report claims that the collapse occurred when a weld between a support column and beam failed in two stages, primarily due to the corrosion caused by years of water and road-salt penetration. The report mentioned that “one is hard-pressed to find a similar example where a carbon-steel framed building in North America or Europe continued to corrode to the point of failure, when no extreme loading is present.”
