Nigerian militia kidnap at least 80 people
Armed militants in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Zamfara have abducted no fewer than 80 people, including children, who were gathering wood. The area is notorious for the frequent abduction of people by armed gangs who seek ransom payments.
Last Friday, there was another kidnapping in the same area, with the police declining to reveal the number of people taken. Gangs often seize children and hold them captive in forest camps for several months, demanding payment for their release or for farmers to pay them for ‘protection’ of their land. Although the military frequently launches airstrikes against such groups in the jungle, kidnappings continue unabated.
