A massive bushfire in Victoria’s west is feared to have burned down at least twelve properties. The authorities will take a visit and assess the damage. The CFA has issued emergency warnings about the fire that descended on the 700-strong community of Dereel, west of Melbourne.

Reportedly, four firefighters have received injuries in an accident. Many people who fled from their houses have been informed of the destruction. CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson said the injured firefighters were expected to be released from hospital on Wednesday night.

“The firefighters enacted full crew protection and took shelter in their vehicle following correct procedures as per their training. Fortunately, none of these injuries were life-threatening, and we expect the firefighters to be released from hospital this evening,” Mr Ferguson said.

Wind is expected to change on Wednesday night which could divert the blaze towards the community of Mount Mercer. A State Control Centre spokeswoman has reported the destruction of 12 properties but is unable to confirm it while the fire still rages.

“We haven’t been able to get in and assess the damage, so if they are homes or sheds, we just don’t know yet,” she said.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said the fire would be subject to a police probe.

“It’s a possibility (that it’s suspicious). The cause is not yet determined so we will be investigating,” she said.
