The Jonglei State General Education Director, Mathew Paul Ruot has said the training is targeting the secondary teachers who did not complete university studies during civil war and were recruited to secondary level as teachers.

Ruot said that after they conducted general reviews and assessments, they found some teachers were qualified to teach at the secondary school level.

He said they presented a proposal to many Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Africa Educational Trust accepted to help them in building the capacity of unqualified teachers.

He said that since the beginning of program in 2008, they have graduated many groups who completed their three-year certificate and will then be given an opportunity to take other diploma programmes so that they can qualify as secondary teachers.

He said that the Diploma programme is being facilitated by one of the universities in Kampala.

He said those who have taken diploma started three-day intensive training and will continue for six months to complete the module before they finish the first semester.

Paul said that they have many challenges facing education system such as the issue of untrained teachers in both secondary and primary schools and the Africa Educational Trust has taken a great step to support in building the capacity of teachers in Jonglei state.

He said that they first group they selected for the diploma programme are about 19 including four female teachers.

He said that they have no access to some of the counties to sensitize them so that they can allow their daughters to go to school adding that some of the families keep their daughters for getting resources during marriage.

He said that if Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology opens a collage for teachers, they will be able to offer more than 200 teachers so that they can equip education system.
