NGO Equal Education (EE) has issued a statement denying allegations of dictating unrealistic timelines to the Basic Education Department. The Department had earlier accused EE for setting hasty deadlines for the norms and standards for school infrastructure.
Statement from Equal Education reads: “All the deadlines EE asks the (department) to uphold were agreed to by the minister in a November 2012 settlement agreement which was noted by the high court. The timeline required the minister to consult the public and promulgate final and binding norms and standards by 15 May 2013. EE granted a one month extension. Now the minister requests ‘at least’ another six months. EE cannot agree to this.”
EE has also accused Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga for allegedly violating an agreement to publish the document by May 15. The Bhisho High Court will hear the matter on July 11. On the other hand, Motshekga claims that EE has been continuously kept up-to-date with the progress and she cannot publish a re-draft of the norms and standards ‘at the whim’ of Equal Education.
“Suddenly the NGO knows all about the challenges that African children face. To suddenly see a group of white adults organizing black African children with half-truths can only be opportunistic, patronizing and simply dishonest to say the least,” the ministry said in a statement.
However, Motshekga’s recent remarks have spurred anger as it has been termed ‘racist’. The DA has called on the Public Service Commission to investigate the statement.
