Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood, CA)

Best known for the “Gayane Ballet Suite” featured in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and for the iconic “Sabre Dance,” Armenian-Soviet composer Aram Khachaturian was born 110 years ago this month. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Peter Rosen’s documentary about the “titan” of Soviet music’s tumultuous career screens at the Egyptian Theatre. Rosen’s Khachaturian exposes a life of contradictions of an artist working within the harsh realities of the Soviet regime. Narrated by Eric Bogosian and co-produced by concert pianist Dora Kuhn, the film won Best Documentary at the Hollywood Film Festival. Kuhn joined the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra to perform the composer’s music in the film, and will be in-person following the screening for a discussion and a reception showcasing the wines of Armenia.
