In an aftershock of almost fourteen days old catastrophic flooding that caused millions of dollars of damage in the northwest community, Sunnyside was flooded again due to an evening thunderstorm on Friday. Fire crews, city crews and emergency officials were all aligned at around 6:30 p.m. to tackle the neighborhood engulfed in the devastation caused by the flood. Authorities claim that the accumulation of silt and debris in the drainage system, along with the ground being highly saturated due to previous heavy flooding, has caused the water to flow freely rather than draining away.

A Sunnyside resident, Monvid Gertners, stated that “there’s definitely something wrong with the storm sewers in this part of our neighbourhood.” Several communities were soaked in almost half a metre of water for nearly an hour before it made its way through city drains. Explaining the cause of the issue, a representative of the City of Calgary Water Services, Dan Limacher, elucidated “the fact that the river’s so high, there’s not a natural gradient to drain the water from these neighbourhoods.”

Authorities have scheduled a visit of Sunnyside by the city taskforce, which will look into the issues faced by local residents that have suffered from another flood and will address their needs for pumping and restoring essential services. City officials have requested any resident suffering from water issues to call for help between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. at 3-1-1. It was revealed that out of 47 calls received by officials, more than a third were from the residents of Sunnyside.
