A qualified Bay Street banker and current chair of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, Philip Olsson, has been nominated by the Ontario government for the chairmanship of the province’s gambling agency. Once the appointment is approved by a legislative committee, Mr. Olsson will be in charge of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and will be tasked to steer the agency through a period of modernization without provoking another fractious debate on casinos.
Mr. Olsson will be most importantly tasked with integrating the province’s horse-racing industry into the OLG, i.e. a primary change that Premier Kathleen Wynne has brought to the province’s gambling strategy. At the same time, Finance Minister Charles Sousa also announced the nomination of a lawyer and academic, Edward Waitzer, to replace Mr. Olsson at the LCBO. Mr. Sousa mentioned in a statement that “Mr. Olsson and Mr. Waitzer each bring a wealth of experience and proven track records as two of Canada’s top business leaders.” He added that “their guidance and oversight would help ensure that OLG and LCBO continue to be run efficiently and are positioned for long-term success.”
Appointment of chairman of province’s gambling agency has come two months after Ms. Wynne and Mr. Sousa removed former OLG chair and media executive, Paul Godfrey, from the position. He was demoted as part of a change in direction for the OLG, as Mr. Godfrey was hired by former finance minister Dwight Duncan and was known for navigating the agency through a massive modernization according to the agenda of former government.
