Tarragon Theatre presents the Toronto premiere of the Stratford Festival hit The Best Brothers By Daniel MacIvor Directed by Dean Gabourie Tarragon Theatre launches its 2013-14 season with the Toronto premiere of The Best Brothers, written by award-winning playwright-in-residence Daniel MacIvor. This bittersweet comedy previews from September 17, opens September 25 and runs to October 27, 2013 in Tarragons Mainspace. Hamilton and Kyle Best lead two very different lives. Hamilton, the older brother, is a straight-laced architect with a wife and little apparent appetite for adventure. Kyle is a free spirited real-estate agent whose boyfriend is a sex worker (though not my sex worker). The sudden death of their mother Ardith Bunny Best in a ludicrous accident involving a drag queen, a loud speaker and Torontos Gay Pride Parade brings the brothers together to sort out the details of the funeral. As they look to celebrate their mother, their relationship is tested while they plan the funeral, and wrestle with fundamental questions of love and family: who did mom love more and who gets the dog? The Best Brothers was a hit with audiences and critics when it premiered last summer at the Stratford Festival: 3-1/2 stars out of 4 MacIvor has the dynamics between siblings so right, youll feel like hes been hacking into your Skype chats its one of the most beautifully bittersweet plays MacIvor has written. J. Kelly Nestruck, The Globe and Mail 4 stars out of 4 Its comedy at its purest. But underneath that wild hilarity is the MacIvor heart and wisdom. Under Dean Gabouries quiet direction, the two actors work together beautifully. Robert Crew, Toronto Star Daniel MacIvors The Best Brothers may be the playwrights best play.
