The country has now 16,000 more new infected people according to investigation the Commission launched.
“Statistics indicate that the country currently is faced with about 16,000 new HIV infections annually, high-level of stigma and discrimination and a national prevalence rate estimated at 2.6% among adult population,” Dr. Esterina Novello, the Chairperson of the Commission said.
She reaffirmed government’s interest to reverse the HIV prevalence through providing leadership and full support to the implementation of the national HIV and AIDS Strategic Plan 2013-2017.
The plan aims at reducing the new HIV and infections, strengthening and scaling up prevention and treatment services to ensure protection of human rights, elimination of stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV and affected persons.
She however said the move requires a collaborative effort and support by all development actors.
Novello was on Thursday addressing the press, activists, government officials and representatives of other agencies during the launch of the marking of the World Aids Day on December 1, 2013.
She said the day will be marked in Malakal town of Upper Nile State under the global theme: “Getting to Zero” reemphasizing the vision of achieving; zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, zero AIDS related deaths.
