Addressing the Senate on Friday, Sen. Pamela Wallin attempted to renew what she described as her call for due process in the efforts by the Conservatives to suspend her over improperly claimed expenses. Sen. Wallin has previously alleged that she is craving for a chance to present her case in complete detail, with her lawyers present, before an impartial body, i.e. something she claims did not take place when she appeared months ago before the Senate committee that oversaw expenses.
Ms. Wallin complained that she was not allowed any chance at that time to cross-examine her accusers, while alleging that the report about her that stemmed from the committee was written before she was asked to defend herself. Ms. Wallin alleged that “due process is not possible in this chamber where it seems the majority want to put my head on a platter,” warning that “the rule of law would have to be ignored by each and every one of you who decides to vote for this motion.”
Conservatives have already notified that they are limiting the time allowed to debate the suspension of three senators embattling misspending scandal. All three Senators who can now be possibly suspended, namely Ms. Wallin, Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazeau, were appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and now face motions to suspend them from the Senate without pay for alleged “gross negligence” while using parliamentary resources. The motions were introduced by the government leader in the Senate, Claude Carignan, and have the support of Mr. Harper.
