A latest revelation of Statistics Canada states that the number of people receiving regular EI benefits has lessened down to 503,800 in September, which is an 8.8 per cent decline from the level in past year. The report revealed on Thursday alleged that on a monthly basis the number of regular EI beneficiaries decreased by 7,100 people or 1.4 per cent. It was highlighted that the all-time high in Canada for people receiving EI benefits was almost 850,000 during the recession of 2009.

Even though the number of El benefits recipients is decreasing continually on a national basis, it is not the same case in every province. It was underlined that British Columbia and Ontario had maximum declines of more than eight per cent, whereas Saskatchewan and Alberta expressed smaller declines. On the other hand, the number of people receiving benefits increased in Quebec and Manitoba, along with the Atlantic Provinces.

In its report, Statistics Canada reported that there can be no one reason that cane explain the drop, since the overall number reflects people receiving benefits, people finding work who no longer need them, and people who’ve been unemployed long enough for their benefits to expire. It was noted that on an annual basis, every single job category expressed decrease in the number of beneficiaries when compared to last year, with one exception as the number of regular EI beneficiaries in natural and applied science occupations increased by 5.5 per cent in September, i.e. the seventh consecutive month of year-over-year increases for this group.
