In a surprise announcement made New Democrat Member of Parliament for Nanaimo-Cowichan, Jean Crowder, on Thursday morning, she disclosed having no interesting in running again in the next federal election, expected in 2015. Crowder has held the seat for almost for a decade, and now have decided to step back in the redrawn Cowichan-Malahat-Langford and Nanaimo-Ladysmith ridings in 2015. She mentioned that “after 10 years, I think it’s time to take time out for my family.”
Crowder shared that she has “three adorable grandchildren who live on the other side of the continent,” and now wants to see them more often, while adding that she will be 63 in 2015, and 67 when the next term ends. She explained having made the decision over Christmas, as she alleged that “It started in the fall when people were asking me where I was going to run, and no one had ever asked me that before.” So far no candidates have emerged to participate in the future contest on behalf of the NDP, since the announcement was an unexpected surprise, although a few have just expressed interest in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding.
However, Crowder stated that regardless of whose name is on the ballot, they will have Crowder’s support. She stated that “my goal is to make sure that both ends of the riding stay New Democrat,” and added that “I love my community” and “It has been a huge privilege to serve here, and I want to thank everyone for their support. I will not be retiring. I fully expect to continue to be active in my community.”
