The House of Commons is set to resume its sitting on Monday as the government pries to steer the agenda of the session from the ongoing Senate expense scandal to Canada’s economy. The MPs will be returning to the Parliament after a six-week break, and there are several key issues that need their immediate review.

Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, held an important meeting with private-sector economists on Monday morning and announced later on that he will be revealing the date to table the next budget in the evening in the House of Commons. Flaherty reaffirmed that the government is on track to balance the budget in 2015. However, when inquired if the government intends to offer goodies to voters in light of growing expectancy of a surplus in the following year, he replied that the government must remain prudent. He mentioned that “I’m not going to spend a lot of money,” though he quickly added that “but I’m not the only one who makes these decisions.”

Political analysts have speculated that Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, will probably have more success during this session in his efforts to “change the channel” with talk of the economy. Analyst Scott Reid alleged that “I think that the government is going to be able to talk a lot about jobs and economic management.” He added on Monday that “all things being equal, it looks better for the prime minister coming into this session than it did the last.”
