The crimes include killing of innocent civilians and role in masterminding the ‘coup attempt.

SPLA Spokesman Philip Aguer told journalists in Juba that the suspects and others still being searched for were arrested for their role in the current crisis. “More than 20 SPLA officers are being investigated for killing innocent civilians. Others are on investigation and others are being searched,” Aguer said.

“We are going to publish the results of the investigations,” Aguer added.

Aguer said the arrests were made as part of the army’s effort to hold officers involved in committing several crimes amidst the current ongoing crisis accountable.

On December 15, 2013 South Sudan, after gaining independence over two years ago, plunged into one of its worst instabilities after gunfire broke out in army barracks in Juba and later escalated to other parts of the country.

Government accused ex Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and several other politicians of masterminding a coup aimed at overthrowing the government.

Peace talks brokered by Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) between loyalists of Riek and government in an effort to restore peace in the country however are stalled.

The United Nations and the US on Wednesday warned that the fresh attacks between rebels and government forces in violation of a cessation of hostilities signed by the two parties last month may worsen insecurity and humanitarian situation in the country.
