Malibu Playhouse (Malibu, CA)
Noël Coward, the master of biting theatrical wit best known for his classic comedies Blithe Spirit and Private Lives, had his first big success with The Vortex. The dramatic comedy was considered downright scandalous when it premiered in 1924, and its setup is still plenty edgy, even today. In this production, set in the hip London of 1965, newly engaged Nicky, struggling with a serious cocaine habit and his repressed homosexuality, brings his fiancée home to meet his mother, an aging socialite having an affair with a younger man (who just happens to be his fiancée’s ex). Coward, who delves into themes of sexual vanity and drug abuse with his trademark jabs, not only wrote the play but also starred in the original productions in London and on Broadway.
