This Tuesday, after almost a month, 18 companies have finally received their licenses. The National Environmental Agency (NEA), which made the announcement this morning that the 18 licensees were a mix of small and large companies.
Previously, the cleaning companies had given feedback that they were not able to meet licensing conditions which includes having at least 50 per cent of staff trained. This was due to the lack of training slots and inability to free up manpower. To help these firms meet their licensing requirements, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency had increased training spaces to up to about 4,500 per month, starting from April till August. Latest figures from the NEA further show that it is processing another 116 applications out of 134 received. Cleaning businesses have till September to obtain a license in order for them to continue their operations.
One of those who have benefited is 21-year-old Siti Rosmah who has been a cleaner for the last two years. She hopes that her salary increases after her training. She expressed that, “Not many people work in a safe environment and they are not aware of the dangers. Usually when I work, we use chemicals but the majority of cleaners don’t use gloves. After going for the course, I learnt that if we work and use chemicals and we don’t use gloves, it could affect our skin.”
