Ontario’s police watchdog has revealed to have laid charges against a Toronto Police officer for assaulting a 24-year-old suspect while he was in custody late last year. According to a statement released by Special Investigations Unit Director, Tony Loparco, on Friday, it was determined that there are reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a crime.
SIU revealed that the unspecified victim was hurt after his arrested by several Toronto Police officers in the area of Woodbine and Danforth Aves. on Dec. 12, 2013. However, no more details about the incident, the officer, the investigation or the extent of the man’s injuries were revealed. The investigation was launched by the province’s police watchdog as per its mandate since it probes serious injuries and deaths involving cops. In his statement, Loparco alleged that “as a result of the SIU investigation, TPS (Toronto Police Service) Const. Jason Nanton is facing one charge of assault with a weapon.” He added that “as this matter is now before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the charged officer and the community, the SIU will make no further comment pertaining to this investigation.”
On the other hand, Toronto Police also refused to comment on the matter. Their Spokesperson, Mark Pugash, only confirmed that Nanton works out of 54 Division, but refused to confirm how long the accused officer has been with the service. Nanton is scheduled to make his first court appearance at Old City Hall on July 17.
