The Nova Scotia Progressive Conservatives lost one MLA today. According an announcement on Friday by Hants West MLA, Chuck Porter, he has decided to no longer serve his constituents as a Progressive Conservatives but as an independent member of the House of Assembly. Consequently, the MLA first elected as a Tory member in 2006, Porter, announced to resign from the Progressive Conservative Caucus position in a move that will reduce the caucuses’ place in the house to 10 members.

During an interview with the Hants Journal, Porter confessed to have been thinking about making the decision for months due to the direction the party is taking under the leadership of Jamie Baillie. He explained that “this is not just about two people who don’t get along,” but in fact “this is about a way of doing business that I don’t accept.” Furthermore, he elucidated that “I’m not going to be told when to speak and how to speak and what topics to speak on.”

In his remarks, Porter said he believes he will be more effective as an independent member than a muzzled party faithful. He stated that “when you try to stifle me, you stifle 15,000 voters in Hants West,” and “that is not democracy. That is not what I ran for.” Porter alleged that it’s easy for politicians to become distracted by partisan politics, but he’s always remembered who he works for. He said “where I, as the representative, think I can do the best job is where I’ll be.”
