Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s lawyer, Dennis Morris, has confirmed the news alleging that the mayor has been subpoenaed to testify in the extortion case involving his crack cocaine video. According to a statement issued on Friday, Morris confirmed that Mr. Ford was served with a subpoena last week by Homicide Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux, i.e. the lead investigator in the Project Brazen 2.

In his remarks, Mr. Morris stated that “it’s not really news” because “it was expected.” Morris revealed that the subpoena was issued for Lisi’s March 2015 trial and served on Aug. 26. Furthermore, Morris revealed that the mayor will continue to refuse to speak to investigators, however he will surely testify at the trial next year. Mr. Morris explained that “when a person is subpoenaed, they are subpoenaed to testify in court on a certain date and he will do that – there is no obligation to speak to anybody prior to that.” He added that “in (his) eyes the Crown has a very skeletal case.” Upon inquiry about why Mr. Ford had to be subpoenaed, Morris alleged that believes it is an “attempt to bolster a weak case,” illustrating that “they are grasping at straws in my view.”

Toronto Police was expected to serve Mr. Ford with a subpoena to testify in the trial of Alexander “Sandro” Lisi, who is his one-time friend and occasional driver. Mr. Lisi is facing several charges including extortion in connection with alleged attempts to retrieve the video of the mayor smoking crack that was being shopped to media outlets.
