Italy’s vibrant culture and beautiful scenery come to life in this double feature of two Los Angeles premiers, Italy in a Day and Quiet Bliss, part of the American Cinematheque’s annual Cinema Italian Style series. The program kicks off with a segment from 9×10 Ninety, in which various filmmakers chose historical footage from the Luce Archives with which to craft stories. Then Italy in a Day, the follow-up to the 2011 film Life in a Day, brings a single 24-hour period across the country to life. Combining hundreds of YouTube videos shot by average Italians over the course of a day, the film creates a kaleidoscopic view of the country, from the mundane to the magical. Quiet Bliss brings the countryside of the Salento in southeastern Italy to life. Nominated for best director by the Italian film critics association, Quiet Bliss uses non-professional actors to capture the story of four women who move to the country to work the land after their business is shut down.
