The Conservative government has been accused of misleading Canadians by alleging to spend $200-million on mental-health services for veterans over the next six years, although it really planned to stretch the money over decades. The announcement was made by three federal cabinet ministers last Sunday morning in Halifax as they unveiled new and expanded mental-health initiatives for veterans, military members and their families.

The announcement was made only two days before Auditor-General, Michael Ferguson, mentioned in a report that many vets have to wait months to access mental-health disability benefits. Criticizing the Conservatives’ announcement, the deputy leader of the New Democrats, Libby Davies, informed the House of Commons on Friday that “earlier this week, the Auditor-General blew the whistle on the Conservatives’ pitiful record when it comes to helping injured veterans. But adding insult to injury, the money they promised to veterans in a face-saving measure will actually spread over, not five years, but over 50 years,” It was stressed that the “Conservatives misled the House, they misled the public, and they misled veterans.”

According to another press release issued on Sunday, the government announced to have “committed to providing an additional investment of approximately $200-million over the next six years. …” However, the document was removed from the Veterans Affairs website after staff in the office of Veterans Affairs Minister, Julian Fantino, revealed that $140.1-million of the money announced Sunday will be spread over the duration of the operational stress injury program, which can take up to 50 years.

  1. The government is losing the battle for the hearts and minds of veterans, and of political pundits. There are some people who will support a party labeled “conservative” no matter what, but I suspect the number of those people is dwindling. This government is squeezing itself into a very tight corner, one poorly managed policy at a time.
