The federal Liberal party has announced to have chosen human rights lawyer, Cynthia Petersen, to probe the serious and first of its kind allegations of misconduct against two members of Parliament it suspended last month. According to an elaborate statement issued by party spokeswoman, Kate Purchase, “Ms. Petersen has been asked to conduct an independent, fair and confidential investigation that will result in the production of a confidential report.”
Liberal leader Justin Trudeau unexpectedly decided to expel MPs Scott Andrews and Massimo Pacetti from party caucus in November until an investigation into allegations of personal misconduct bares a result. However, both the accused men have maintained their innocence, while none of these allegations have been proven and no one has been charged with an offence. In her remarks, Purchase stated that “Ms. Petersen will deliver this report to Mr. Trudeau to help inform his decision on whether the two MPs, Mr. Pacetti and Mr. Andrews, should sit in the (federal Liberal) caucus and be allowed to stand as LPC candidates in 2015.”
Purchase alleged that Petersen might start interviews as early as the holiday break, i.e. after the House rise for the break on Dec. 13., adding that there is no deadline for her report either. Purchase stated that “this does not preclude any process through the Speaker’s office with an additional neutral third party,” adding that “we continue to believe that the Speaker has provided the right path forward for all parties involved to ensure a more inclusive and welcoming workplace; however, Mr. Trudeau has a separate decision to make regarding the two LPC MPs.”
