Ottawa and Gatineau Muslim leaders have released an official statement on Wednesday, out-rightly opposing a recent message from a Kemptville-born alleged member of ISIL, 24-year-old John Maguire, who called for attacks against Canadians. Representing the Imams of majority mosques in the region, the statement reinforced Tuesday’s call by Ottawa Muslim religious leaders for their communities to report individuals who are suspected of being radicalized and may be involved with terrorist acts.
The statement from Imams mentioned that “we categorically and unequivocally condemn all kinds of attacks against innocent people in Canada or any other place in the world. The teachings of our faith leave no room for such actions.” It was added that “as such, we call upon our fellow brothers and sisters in faith to outright reject the call to violence by ISIS (another version of the name used by the extremist group). We vehemently stress that Muslims have absolutely no duty to migrate to ISIS-controlled areas or to assist in any way, shape or form in promoting their cause. We believe that Muslims can legitimately continue to live in Canada while obeying all laws of this great nation and sincerely practicing and exemplifying the teachings of our faith within the Canadian context.”
In a six-minute propaganda video posted on YouTube over the weekend, Muslim converted Maguire identified himself as Abu Anwar al-Canadi in an ISIL (sometimes called ISIS) video and read a scripted message repeatedly referring to the October killings of two Canadian forces members.
