RCMP has confirmed to have suspended, arrested and charged one of its own officer, 31-year-old Const. Michael Chachula, for one count each of trafficking cocaine and ecstasy. The RCMP officer with seven years of service, Chachula, was arrested in Swift Current on Monday. He is also credited to have served at the Swift Current rural detachment since 2012.

While making the announcement on Wednesday, RCMP Supt. Alfredo Bangloy alleged that “it is never easy to speak about investigations like these. It’s very disheartening that a serving police officer, sworn to uphold the law, is facing criminal charges.” He stated that “this is unacceptable and we understand the public expects more of us.” According to the RCMP, it first received a criminal complaint against Chachula in April 2014 that was forwarded to the Moose Jaw Police Service, in accordance with RCMP’s external investigations policy.  However, later more “information unrelated to the original criminal complaint” was uncovered that led to the investigation into drug-related offences.

Thereafter, RCMP explained that “an external investigation by another police service was once again considered, however due to the specialized resources and expertise required, it was decided that the RCMP would retain conduct of the investigation into the new alleged offences.” Consequently, the RCMP’s ‘F’ Division major crime unit started investigating the drug-related allegations in October and culminated its investigation to the two charges and Chachula’s immediate suspension. In addition to that, Chachula will also face an internal code of conduct investigation. He is scheduled to appear Feb. 18 in Swift Current provincial court.
