Women in Science and Engineering UofT Chapter is pleased to announce it’s 3rd annual conference this March 21-22 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre!
Why should you attend? This year’s conference will feature inspirational leaders with scientific and engineering backgrounds covering a wide variety of topics discussing personal and professional development. Caroline Charter
General Manager, Operations at Microsoft
Caroline provides visionary leadership and direction for systems and business processes. She recently joined Microsoft and currently holds the position GM of Operations at Microsoft responsible for the Latin American Operational Centre as well as holding global responsibility for IT systems management and order entry quality across the operation centers globally. Prior to Microsoft Caroline held the position of Vice President within Worldwide Alliance & Channels Operations at Oracle Corporation. In 2013 she was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in the Corporate Executive Category. In 2014 she was nominated for the Premiers Award in Ontario recognizing her contributions to the industry. Caroline regularly speaks around the world to diverse groups of women, individuals & organizations including the University of Miami, The Federated Press, WXN, and Microsoft Women in Technology.
Jennifer Christie
Territory Sales Manager, John Deere Canada ULC
Jennifer defies our perception of the typical farmer. While working full-time, she still proudly calls her family’s 6th generation farm home and is as comfortable on the tractor, as she is in the boardroom. Prior to her current role as a Territory Sales Manager with John Deere, Jennifer was the Canadian promotions lead for the global equipment leader. She has established relationships with many producers, and is a strong advocate for youth, women and the agriculture industry. Jennifer is establishing a women’s agri-business network in Southern Ontario, is a director for 4-H Canada, and co-founded the Canadian Agri-Business Education Foundation. Selected one of 2013 Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada by the Women’s Executive Network and The National Post, Jennifer has an Executive MBA from the Ivey School of Business at Western University.
Emilie Cushman

Emilie loves to engage and connect. Her background in social enterprise and micro-finance taught her the value of helping people achieve their goals while challenging the norm. Since graduating from Windsor’s Odette School of Business and Canada’s Next 36 Entrepreneurial Institute at the University of Toronto, Emilie is blazing the trail to disrupt university admissions for the better having co-founded the tech startup Kira Talent, a digital assessments platform that allows you to assess thousands of university applicants using timed video and written responses. .
As Co-Founder of Kira Talent, Emilie handles sales, team performance, fundraising and stakeholder relations. Kira Talent, a venture-backed startup led by prominent investors including Relay Ventures, Roger Martin, Gary Slaight, Tony Lacavera and David Shaw, has recently been named one of Canada’s Top 25 Up and Coming Startups. From her time in social enterprise and now with Kira Talent, Emilie was recently named the HSBC Women Leader of Tomorrow and one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women by the Women’s Executive Network.
Diane Freeman
Councillor, City of Waterloo – Ward 4
Diane Freeman is a Professional Engineer and Fellow of Engineers Canada. Diane is a manager with Conestoga-Rovers & Associates Limited and a Councillor for the City of Waterloo. In 2010-2011 Diane served as the President of Professional Engineers Ontario.
Diane is a board member with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Grand River Hospital, Engineers Canada, the Ontario College of Veterinarians and the Air and Waste Management Association.
Diane received the 2009 KW Oktoberfest Rogers professional women of the year award; a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal; and a Leading Woman Building Communities Award from the Ontario Woman’s Directorate

M. Cynthia Goh

Professor, University of Toronto
M. Cynthia Goh is Professor at the Department of Chemistry, the Institute of Medical Science, the Munk School of Global Affairs, and Director of the Impact Centre at the University of Toronto. She received her PhD from the University of California at Los Angeles, and carried out postdoctoral fellowships at Columbia University and the University of California, Berkeley, prior to taking a faculty position at the University of Toronto.
Professor Goh’s interest in the education of scientist-entrepreneurs led her to introduce a non-credit series in 2004, which led to what is now known as Entrepreneurship101 at MaRS, the flagship entrepreneur training program of the MaRS Discovery District, with thousands registered attendees annually. In 2010, she introduced Techno, a one-month intensive training program specifically geared for university scientists intending to build a tech-based company. Techno2010 to 2014 have led to the creation of over 70 start-ups based on the results of scientific research, many of which now have sales and follow-on funding.
Craig Hunter
CEO, Bitmaker Labs
Craig is the CEO of Bitmaker Labs, Canada’s largest coding bootcamp where 92% of full-time graduates end up with a new career in the tech industry within 3 months of graduating their 2-3 month programs. He is an Advisory Board Member at Venture for Canada, an Advisor to Teach for Canada, and is a guest lecturer at Ivey Business School. Previously he was employee #52 at Uber, worked in Ontario/Canadian politics, and co-chaired the inaugural TEDxUWO. He spends a lot of his time helping early stage Canadian startups navigate regulations, raise money, and scale.

Dr. Joshua Liu is a physician turned entrepreneur who believes that the future of healthcare depends on the intersection of design, data and technology. He is the co-founder & CEO of SeamlessMD, a healthcare technology company advancing patient care in surgery using mobile & web technology. Joshua is a Startup Advisor to Northeastern University, and has been named a Forbes 30 Under 30 in Healthcare and Canadian Top 20 Under 20.

Anne Sado
President, George Brown College
A native of Toronto, Anne Sado has been President of George Brown College since 2004. Anne had a very successful career at Bell Canada prior to joining the college, holding increasingly senior positions across a range of disciplines including engineering, operations, customer service, finance and business planning.
Beyond her leadership at the college, she is Chair of ORION, Chair of Polytechnics Canada and past chair of Trillium Health Centre. She also sits on many other not for profit boards, which have given her a 360-degree perspective of the social and economic challenges facing the GTA. Anne was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in June 2013. She has also recently been recognized as a YWCA Woman of Distinction and inducted into WXN’s Hall of Fame as one of Canada’ s Most Powerful Women.
Anne holds an MBA from the University of Toronto as well as a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering. Anne was also awarded a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from the University of Toronto in June 2011.
Amanda Wintik
CEO, Centre for Applied Neuroscience
Dr. Mandy Wintink is currently the CEO and Director of the Centre for Applied Neuroscience, a company she founded in 2010 to apply knowledge of how the brain and mind work to the workplace, life, and sports. In addition to having a PhD in Neuroscience and Psychology, Mandy is also a Life Coach, Certified Yoga Teacher, and competitive athlete, weaving together many elements of high performance and mind-body awareness. She is a strong advocate of self-disclosure, sharing experiences, and striving for a deeper sense of awareness, success, and self-actualization. She also teaches at Ryerson and the University of Toronto, facilities many private courses and workshops, writes regularly on related topics of the mind and brain.
