South Sudan Council of Ministers resolved at its regular meeting today to postpone the declared June. 30th, 2015 General National Elections till peace is achieve. The council of minister resolved to extend the lifespan of the elected positions and agreed for constitution amendment. The council of ministers resolved that it will table the required constitutional amendments before the national parliament next week.
Community Empowerment for Progress Organization welcomes the decision of the council of ministers as a positive response to our called for “No elections before peace”. The decision of the council of ministers demonstrated culture of “respecting public opinion or electorates stand”
Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO said the decision of the council of ministers is fine but still legally it requires the national parliament to amend the constitution. Also the supreme court of South Sudan has to make a rule on the elections officially. The situation our country is facing now it cannot allow General National Elections to be conducted.
Since the National Parliament is in recess till the April 5, 2015, CEPO is urging the National Parliamentarians during their recess to inform the citizens about this decision and collected the opinion of the citizens’ on the matter of the constitutional amendment. The extension of the lifespan of the elected positions in the current government has to be time in line with the demand for peace. Mr. Yakani Stressed
CEPO in strong terms is calling upon the government to use the constitutional amendment opportunity as a chance of obtaining peace. The recent signed peace road map signed by the south Sudan warring parties in Addis Ababa on the areas of establishment of Transitional Government of National Unity, if it is to be taken seriously than elections is not relevant
