Laemmle’s NoHo 7 (North Hollywood, CA)
Robots behaving badly take over Laemmle’s Throwback Thursday Film Series with separate screenings of Westworld and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Travel back to a time when on-screen robots had a lot more charisma — and visual panache — than today’s CGI monstrosities. In Westworld (directed by Michael Crichton — yep, he directed movies, too) a robot malfunction creates havoc and terror for unsuspecting vacationers at a futuristic, adult-themed amusement park. Then, in July, AI-human relations deteriorate even further in Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey. For computer H.A.L. 9000 is not only the latest in technology … “he” might the next step in evolution as well. Blast back to the future, thanks to these true classics of sci-fi cinema.
