After an absolute discharge in the assault and cocaine possession case, Sen. Patrick Brazeau has vowed to return to the Senate “as quickly as possible.” Earlier in September, Brazeau pleaded guilty to reduced charges of assault and possession of cocaine in exchange for the Crown dropping the sexual assault charge against him due to lack of evidence.
Soon after the absolute discharge was granted on Wednesday, Brazeau addressed media outside Gatineau courthouse and said that “now that this case is over, I’ll focus on my Senate role.” He explained that he is “still on leave at this moment.” The absolute discharge was jointly recommended by the Crown and Brazeau’s lawyer, implying that he will not serve jail time or have a criminal record from the case. Even after being discharged, Brazeau suspected that the “taint” of the sex assault accusation will continue to haunt him for the rest of his life. He alleged that “I endured it for two-and-a-half years and I might endure it for the rest of my life.”
In response to a query about another case regarding fraud and breach of trust charges relating to Senate expenses, Brazeau stated that “if it does go to trial, I’m going to fight and I’m going to win.” He is expected back in court in March to defend himself against those charges. Since he was kicked out of the Conservative caucus in November of 2013, Brazeau has now announced that he will return to the Senate as an independent member. He stated that “I’m an independent First Nations senator.”
