The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority has referred complaints about two current MPs to the police for investigation into their expenses claims. According to the compliance officer of the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, Peter Davis, the 2014/15 annual report enlisted three MPs that were reported during his current term of office.

However, the watchdog failed to explain the nature of irregularities the accused are suspected of committing. Mr Davis, who is a former police offer, alleged that the MPs are his first to be referred over for potential criminal offences. The expenses claims currently under investigations might have been submitted by either an MP or an MP’s members of staff.

In his remarks, Mr Davis stated that “during the course of the reporting period I have felt it necessary for the first time during my term of office to refer requests for investigation received from IPSA to the Police.” He added that “as I referred to previously, the Compliance Officer has a joint working agreement with the Metropolitan Police which states: ‘Where, in the exercise of their duties, either IPSA or the Compliance Officer is given a reason to suspect that a criminal offence may have been committed by an MP or a member of an MP’s staff, they shall seek advice from the Commissioner and notify the Metropolitan Police of their suspicions, and hand over any relevant documentation upon request.’” Conclusively, Mr David stated that “three cases have been forwarded to the Metropolitan Police for assessment; one has been finalised and two remain with the police.”
