Netherland bans TikTok
The Dutch government has decided to prohibit government officials from using TikTok on their work phones. State Secretary Van Huffelen conveyed this decision in a letter to the House of Representatives, adding that its use is immediately discouraged and employees are requested to delete the app.
In the short term, government-provided phones will be configured to allow only pre-approved apps to be installed through management software, thereby disallowing “spy-sensitive apps,” including TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese company Bytedance.
The restrictions also apply to other apps, as the government aims to limit the security risks posed by multiple apps. The definition of “safe” apps, however, remains unclear.
The decision is based on the advice of the AIVD intelligence service, which warns against espionage risks for all apps managed by countries with an offensive cyber program aimed at the Netherlands and Dutch interests, including China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
The Netherlands joins other European countries such as the UK and Belgium in taking measures against TikTok. The European Commission had already decided on a ban last month. The US has also banned TikTok for federal government officials, and the measure has been implemented at other levels of government.
