Reports have confirmed that Queen Elizabeth II’s Christmas message will be broadcasted on radio and television in Britain at 3 p.m. (1500 GMT, 10 a.m. EST) and in many parts of the British Commonwealth on Christmas Day. The message reportedly highlights that light can triumph over darkness after a difficult year. It points out that there have been “moments of darkness” in the last year, referring to extremist attacks and a migrant crisis that has overwhelmed Europe, but cites the Bible as offering solace.

The excerpt released by the Buckingham Palace states that the queen will say that “the Gospel of John contains a verse of great hope, often read at Christmas carol services: ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’” The pre-recorded speech is a longstanding Christmas tradition and it will be posted on the royal YouTube channel as well.

The queen is known to have always written the brief Christmas speech herself, which often reflects on her personal beliefs and stresses on the importance of family. This year, the queen’s speech is also anticipated to refer to the fact that it has been the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and will thank those who served in the conflict. The queen, her husband Prince Philip and senior members of the royal family plan to attend church services Christmas morning and spend most of the day at her sprawling Sandringham estate in Norfolk, 110 miles (175 kilometers) north of London.
