Among their composers’ most enduringly popular works, Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto and Sibelius’ Second Symphony were both begun in Italy, about a year apart. Each piece on this dynamic program reveals utterly idiosyncratic hallmarks of orchestral color and musical fantasy. Pianist Lars Vogt has been called “one of the most extraordinary musicians of any age group” and plays Rachmaninoff’s lyrically moving and technically dazzling concerto with an expressive and impressive prowess. Saturday and Sunday performances also include Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake.
