Alison Redford, winner of the recent Alberta Progressive Conservative (PC) leadership campaign, took oath in a 30-minute ceremony. Redford is the first woman in the history of the province to become a premier.
In her acknowledgment address, Redford promised to stick to her priorities.
She said: “Their concerns were overwhelmingly about the same things – better access to health care, better education for our children, and the need for a more disciplined approach to our spending priorities. In the coming days, I look forward to naming a new cabinet and taking action on these priorities as the first order of business.”
During her speech, Redford made sure to acknowledge the work done by previous position holder, Ed Stelmach, who served the province since 2006.
Redford said: “Ed Stelmach is a man who lives by example, the ethic of the public service. He’s worked very hard for Albertans all his life, and on a more personal note, I want to thank Ed Stelmach for his support of me as a rookie MLA, and the confidence that you showed in me in appointing me to be your Minister of Justice.”
She also showed gratitude to her family – husband Glen and daughter Sarah, mother Helen (late).
“It’s a journey that started long before the beginning of the leadership campaign (fighting back tears) as many life’s journeys do – with my mother, who encouraged me to get involved in politics, democracy, and public service,” said Redford.
