Government increases home-based subsidies for low income earners

The government has changed its criteria to qualify for home and community based services.

Initially, families earning $1400 or less were receiving subsidies for a better life. However, with the recent increased spending on families announced by the government, families earning $2200 or less stand eligible for the subsidy. The step taken has increased the recipients of the program to two-third of the total population. A significant proportion of the beneficiaries of the program are middle and low income families.

 The initiative will be implemented with the help of Ministry of Community, Youth, and Sports (MCYS) and Ministry of Health (MOH). The ministries will be spending $60 million and above in subsidies every year with special concentration on the elderly population.

According to various researches, approximately 40,000 additional individuals will be benefitting from the program. Disbursement to the elderly of the society is made convenient through programs like Intermediate and Long Term Care (ILTC), Interim Disability Assistance Program for Elderly, and ElderShield. Amongst the 40,000 beneficiaries of the program, about 10,000 are elderly who will receive assistance in any form requested. Households qualifying for the program with an elderly at home also stand eligible to a $120 grant if the family agrees to hire a foreign maid to take care of the elder family members.

The announcement of the program was made by the Ministry of Health on Monday in a press conference with details of the implementation plan.
