The Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Tun Najib Razak announced on Thursday that the salary disbursement of all public servants will no longer be through the Public Service Remuneration Scheme (SBPA) but via the revised version of the Malaysian Remuneration System (SSM), which has been criticized by several analysts as favoring the low-income public servants only.

The SSM salary adjustments raise the level of income of professional and management grade 1 – 54 by 13% whereas the A, B, and C grades will experience a 9% raise only. 8% increase has been announced for grade 2 and 3 staff members and 7% for the Chief Secretary to the Government and grade 1 officers. He further added that there will be an increase in the Cost of Living Allowance (cola) as well. However, that will be effective for B and C area servants only. B areas servants will have 250RM as (cola) and area C servants will have 150RM as cola. Cola for both areas of servants has been increased by 50RM.

PM made the remuneration system announcement at the congregation at the Putrajaya International Convention Center stating that a special committee will be formed to further analyze the effects of the change in remuneration system and improvements to the program will be made accordingly.
