A fisherman of P.E.I. had to spend almost two hours alone in the cold water of the Northumberland Strait on Monday, after his boat caught fire so he had to abandon it and wait for rescue.

The fisherman made a phone call to the Halifax-based Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at precisely 4:20 a.m. in the morning on Monday. He narrated the event that his boat has caught fire and now he is sinking. He informed them that he was within sight of land and about to go into the water in his survival suit. Consequently a Cormorant rescue helicopter was launched from CFB Greenwood towards the scene along with a Coast Guard vessel. The West Point Fire Department was also notified. Firefighters discovered the sinking boat of the captain of the fishing boat Something Different, which took them out into the bay.

The chief of the O’Leary Fire Department, Ronnie Phillips, shared that the fisherman took all possible precautions before abandoning his ship. Phillips explained that “he was in a rescue suit and he had pulled the cover off his engine house and was using that as a boat. He was floating in that.” Phillips further added that “he was setting off flares as well. He had drifted: from shore it looked like about several hundred feet away from the boat when he was setting off his flares. They were basically able to go directly to him.”

Firefighters rescued the man out of his makeshift dinghy at 6:06 a.m. and he now rests in good shape at the Howards Cove.
