U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron has arrived in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Thursday to make a surprise visit to the North African country to discuss bilateral relations with Libyan officials.
Earlier this week Britain received a “potential threat” to its embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli, a few days later the Foreign Office advised British nationals to leave Benghazi.
However Mr. Cameron has flown today from Algiers to Tripoli to mark his second visit to the capital in 15 months.
During his last visit in September 2011, Mr. Cameron travelled to Libya with French President Nicolas Sarkozy to celebrate the liberation of this country from Colonel Gaddafi.
He is scheduled to make a meeting with Prime Minister Ali Zeidan and President Mohammed el-Megarif to hold a joint news conference later, in which he will possibly discuss the Islamist militancy threat across the region.
Mr. Cameron staged a walk about in Martyrs’ Square and received a warm welcome by the crowd.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Prime minister met the Libyan interior minister, Ashour Shuail and visited a police training academy. Mr. Cameron has promised to send more British policemen to coach Libyan police officers. British servicemen are also providing training assistance to Libyan soldiers.
Mr. Cameron was the first British prime minister ever to visit a North African country since its independence in 1962.
