The Senate committee, designated to investigate all housing allowance claimants in the red chamber, has submitted its report concluding that all claims are genuine except for the claims of three senators. The senator supervising this sophisticated investigation, Sen. David Tkachuk, informed the Senate on Thursday that the committee has interviewed Sen. Dennis Patterson, of Nunavut, and Sen. Rod Zimmer, of Manitoba, both of whom were found to have met all liable residency requirements under Constitution.

The three exceptional cases, namely of the suspended Sen. Patrick Brazeau, Sen. Mac Harb and Sen. Mike Duffy, have already been outsourced to external auditors. Tkachuk further revealed that from this point forward, every senator claiming housing allowance will have to present a driver’s license, health card and income tax return, for proving the residency of the province they represent. The three well-reputed members of the internal economy committee had been interviewing all senators, since Monday, with doubtful or incomplete documentation in lieu of their housing claims. This probe was launched by a collaborative recommendation from both The Conservative and Liberal leaders in the Senate, who directed the committee to investigate every senator claiming housing allowance whose evidence of primary residence being outside Ottawa was questionable. It was also unanimously demanded that anyone caught violating the rules shall repay every cent of the claim, with interest.

Widespread suspicion of false housing expenses claims among senators was prompted late last year after the controversy over Brazeau claiming to live primarily in Maniwaki, Que., on expense forms, while actually living in a home he owned in Gatineau, Que.
