After repetitive recommendations since moths, the NDP government has finally decided to launch an examination into the Home for Colored Children. It was confirmed by the Premier, Darrell Dexter, on Tuesday that an independent panel is settled to be established for focusing on reconciliation and healing for alleged victims of abuse at the home.

It was reported by numerous media outlets that the panel is highly anticipated to be launched in the throne speech starting the new legislature session on Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, there were several more details made available regarding the process. Dexter asserted that, even though, the terms of reference are not prepared as yet, the throne speech is expected to provide a high level look at government’s plans. He further revealed that the panel idea is a result of consultation with former residents and community leaders. Dexter mentioned, while at Province House, on Tuesday morning, that “the message that we got (on a process) was one of reconciliation, one of healing, one that is designed to bring a community back together, one to recognize the historical context in which these decisions were getting made.”

The jury has still yet to determine whether the announcement will be able to please all those who have been demanding for such action. Numerous Nova Scotians have recounted agonizing childhoods at the orphanage, many describing rapes, beatings, hunger and being kept out of school. A government source revealed that the word “inquiry” will not be used in the throne speech since it has “specific connotations” and “legal implications,” which is not clear yet whether the panel will meet that description.
