The Opposition has demanded a separate investigation into the repayment of improperly claimed living expenses of Sen. Mike Duffy, i.e. an amount of $90,000, which was recently revealed by PM Harper’s chief of staff to have been loaned by Nigel Wright.

It was initially reported by CTV on Wednesday that Mr. Wright had signed an exact amount cheque to Duffy for repaying the wrongly acquired Senate living expenses. The statement from Prime Minister’s Office stated that Wright, who is a former Bay Street executive, loaned a full amount cheque to Duffy, i.e. a total of $90,172. It was alerted by New Democrat MP, Charlie Angus, that “we need someone to come in and find out what deals were made, who was behind it, who was involved, were other senators involved, was this a deal that involved other senators? It’s very, very serious.”

Having repaid the controversial expenses in full amount timely in March, Duffy was highly applauded by the Conservatives last week as they boasted him of showing “leadership” in the decision. However, it was not disclosed until recently that the money was actually loaned to Duffy by Wright. It was only on Wednesday, when an e-mail from prime minister’s director of communications, Andrew MacDougall, revealed that “Mr. Duffy agreed to repay the expenses because it was the right thing to do. However, Mr. Duffy was unable to make a timely repayment.” It added that “Mr. Wright therefore wrote a cheque from his personal account for the full amount owing so that Mr. Duffy could repay the outstanding amount.”
