After the news hit media that a Montreal-area NDP MP has not paid more than $58,000 in provincial taxes, Tyrone Benskin issued an apology statement on Friday asserting that he now intends to pay back every cent he owes. Benskin highlighted that in order for a society to be prosperous and fair each citizen must do their part and he admitted hasn’t always done his. Benskin alleged that “I apologize,” and “fortunately, I am working on sorting out my situation with the Canada Revenue Agency. I intend to pay back every last cent of the money I owe, as soon as possible.” He added that “I regret that I was unable to do it before now.”

It was revealed that Benskin owes exactly $58,097 to Quebec’s revenue agency in lieu of pending unpaid taxes during the time period from 2007 to 2011. Consequently, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair declared to have suspended Benskin from his position as the deputy critic in light of the recent revelation related to unpaid taxes. Mr. Mulcair stated that “Mr. Benskin has apologized and will be correcting the situation himself and in the meantime I’ve removed him from the shadow cabinet, he is no longer responsible for official languages until he has cleared up his entire situation, as he must.”

Meanwhile, Mulcair nominated Matthew Dubé (Chambly–Borduas) to work as the deputy critic for official languages. The issue was highlighted after an announcement said that the province has contacted the House of Commons to block part of Benskin’s salary to repay the tax arrears.
