An armless Saskatoon man ticketed and fined for not wearing a seatbelt, Steve Simonar, has won a legal challenge against his ticket. The case was subsequently dismissed by the judge after the Crown prosecutor withdrew the ticket. Simonar mentioned that “the best I think is yet to come or I hope it is,” alleging that “I’m still expecting some kind of an apology from the officer if not Saskatoon city. We’ll see what comes out of that.” Simonar has legally been officially exempted to drive without a belt.

However, highlighting his concern, Simonar stated that “it was never really about the ticket,” alleging that “If that’s what they thought, they missed the whole point of the whole event. He just did the wrong thing.” 55-year-old Simonar is a double amputee, who had both his arms given up in a boating accident almost 30 years ago. Simonar drives a specially modified truck, using his feet to steer, that was approved by authorities in advance.  However, Simonar was fined and given a $175 ticket earlier this year.

Soon after the accident that claimed his arms, Simonar passed a driving test using his feet and was approved to drive by the Saskatchewan Government Insurance, which elaborately inspected his modified vehicles and method of driving. Previously Simonar carried a doctor’s note alleging that he will be unable put on a seatbelt, although now he is now informed that a doctor’s not will not be enough, so should to apply to SGI, Saskatchewan’s licensing agency, for a medical exemption.
